General

Simple word of mouth. In this digital era, the community of professionals who shoot film is pretty tight, and once people realized we did things the right way, it was impossible to keep word from getting around.

We love working with all kinds of photographers, from experts to novices and enthusiasts! By the way, self-service printing is for anyone, not just photographers. Just download the app, upload your images, edit them to your satisfaction, then order your prints.

Wrong-o! Richard isn’t just a film lab, we’re #morethanfilm. Although a lot of our big name clients shoot film, we actually work with tons of digital and hybrid shooters! Also, did you know that Richard is the godfather of Color Profiling and has been helping to create foundations for film and digital photog success for decades? That means from post-production and color-correction to our wide array of print services, Richard has your back.

We’d be happy to offer cut-rate prices if our clients were happy with cut-rate service. But, our clients are some of the best in their craft, and they require the consistency and attention to detail that only Richard provides. So, we offer a premium service and our prices reflect the value we provide.

Let’s face it: even people who can deftly manipulate F-stops, shutter speeds and lighting angles can be all thumbs when a mouse is involved. And there’s little more frustrating than staring blankly at a screen at 2 a.m., wondering why the colors still don’t look right. Many find that allowing us to sweat that for them removes hours of useless toil and stress--regardless of whether they're a film or digital shooter.

Actually, we think you may be surprised how reasonably priced this service is. And when you do the math and understand that spending less time on the computer allows you to shoot (and bill) more, you may find that it makes perfect sense for you.

Our team is highly skilled at what they do. We don't just hire any kid off the street that has some photoshop experience. We're professionals and our production team goes through a rigorous interview process before we can determine whether or not they're a fit for our team. We have years of experience, and work with all levels of photographers.

Another reason why we're priced differently than other labs is because we take the time and energy in determining your style and how you like your images to look. We've flipped the lab model here, we're correcting to YOUR specs, not just ours! Take that one step further and you've got yourself a Color PAC (scroll below for more details).

They're are tons of great options out there! A few we recommend are Instaproofs and Pic-Time...

You can find pricing for film processing and scanning, as well as darkroom prints, here on our website. Or, calculate the exact price of your order by going to our Online Film Ordering!

Pricing for our print products is available in our print application, ROES; we don't list this pricing on our website because all of our print products can be highly customized, resulting in a wide range of prices for each product depending on your preferences.

Color PAC

The Richard Color PAC (or, Personal Account Consultation) offers a premium service to professional film, digital, and hybrid photogs who want to take their business and brand to the #nextlevel. Richard helps photographers feel confident that their brand is preserved by their lab and the output is always consistent.

Absolutely. You may always ask for an existing color profile to serve as a guide for the processing of your images at no extra cost. (Keep in mind that duplicating the processing choices of a photographer you admire is no guarantee that your shots will look like his or hers.)

No, using someone else’s color profile is absolutely free! We encourage you to try them out, especially if you are thinking about getting a Color PAC to build out your own color profile. We have color profiles for most of the photographers listed here.

Film

We use both Noritsu and Frontier film scanners (find out more about the two machines here). For special projects/custom scans, we also have an Epson Expression flatbed scanner and an Aztek Premier drum scanner.

You can find pricing for film processing and scanning here on our website, or calculate the price of your order through our Online Film Ordering! Pricing for darkroom printing from black & white film negatives can be found here.

Our standard film scanners output in JPEG format. If you are using our drum scanner or flatbed scanner, files can be delivered in TIFF format upon request.

Our scan are delivered via email, with two different options for downloading your files..

1) One-Click Download
Just click the link in the email, and your scans will download automatically. Because your files will be downloaded as one zip file, a loss of internet connection will require you to restart your download; please make sure you have a steady internet connection and do not let your computer go to sleep.

2) FTP Download
You'll receive specifics for downloading your scans in the email (check out Richard's FTP download instructions for an easy visual guide to downloading your scans with Filezilla).

Nope! Proof prints are completely optional. But there are a lot of benefits to printing your work you might not have realized; check them out here. Plus, proof prints are discounted when ordering with your film services! #thrifty

Here at Richard, we are dedicated to preserving the custom, handcrafted process of traditional black and white darkroom printing. The darkroom is the motherland of photographic printing, and hands down the best black and white print you can get. Our options and pricing are available here. To learn more about the darkroom process, go here.

Uh-oh! You are looking at a truncated version of the file. To see it in its full glory, open the file in Photoshop or Lightoom—this will show you the true scan size.

Pushing and pulling refer to the process of over-developing film and under-developing it, respectively (usually to compensate for exposure during shooting). To learn the ins-and-outs of what pushing and pulling means, check out Richard’s blog post.

Uh-oh! That’s a twin check sticker, and it’s placed on the film before developing it to identify the roll. If you are seeing it on your scan, then there is most likely an advancement issue with your camera or the film was loaded incorrectly—this section of the film roll is not supposed to have an image captured on it.

Logistics

Start your order with Richard’s easy peasy online ordering (learn more about the features and benefits here). Then, safely package your film along with a printout of your packing slip (including barcode) from your online order, and send it to the lab at 28022 Industry Drive, Valencia, California 91355.

Psst, you can also kick it old school with our analog domestic and international order forms.

Don't worry, pal! You can create as many orders as you want through the online order form site—the only orders that will be entered into our system and invoiced are the ones associated with the packing slip you include in your film shipment. We'll also be sure to hand count your film and adjust for any special instructions before charging your card and putting your order into production.

Mail the film directly to the lab: 28022 Industry Drive, Valencia, CA 91355.

Psst… don’t forget to include your packing slip (if you used our online film ordering) or your old-school film order form.

FedEx and UPS provide online tracking numbers, for those who want more security (including us). However, USPS is the most economical way to go.

Photographers located internationally typically use DHL. We also see international post, which in some countries is very reliable (AusPost and CanadaPost get great reviews from our clients!) Please note on the outside of the box that film is inside.

We’ll email you as soon as your film gets here (don't forget to check your spam folder). Make sure you give us the most up-to-date, accurate email address on the order form. This way you won’t miss a beat.

Our standard film scanners output in JPEG format. If you are using our drum scanner or flatbed scanner, files can be delivered in TIFF format upon request.

Reference names are pretty important! We need this for efficiency purposes, and it also helps us track jobs. The reference name can be anything that helps you recognize what the order is for (like the shoot name, date, location, etc.)

Your processed/scanned negatives (and proof prints, if you ordered them) will be shipped back to you!

You'll most likely want to use our Standard Shipping option, and if no shipping option is indicated when you send us your film, our default will be to ship them Standard. Overnight and 2nd Day shipping is also available for continental US shipments only (with tracking, hooray!).

Shipments leave the lab via USPS and UPS mail carriers; we will always choose the best one for your individual order.

Additional charges may apply for oversized or overweight packages, including international yearly neg holds.

Contact us! There is a one-time setup fee of $25. You can choose from any of our current elegant boxes, but you can add whatever you'd like inside. We ask that you supply us with the products you would like included with your package (such as flyers, business cards, special tissue paper, special ribbon, tags, stamps or other items for the box exterior).

After receiving the additional items for your custom packaging, send us some pictures of a package done up just the way you would like it! We will do a couple of test runs and send pictures for your approval to make sure we are meeting your specifications.

Once you approve the final packaging, there is a $2 charge for each order that uses your packaging. There is a checkbox in the “Cart” section of ROES where you can indicate to use your custom packaging.

We will let you know when our stock of materials for your packaging gets low, so that you can send us more.

ROES

You can download our print application, ROES, here (all of our print pricing can be found in the app).
If you need any help getting started, check out Richard’s Quickstart Guides for ordering albums and ordering prints, canvas, & frames.
 Happy printing!

After you download ROES, open the application; you can order products by clicking on "Order Products" on the upper right or clicking the icon of the product you want in "Featured Products" on the home page.

For detailed instructions, check out Richard's ROES Quickstart Guides:
Albums Quickstart Guide
Prints, Canvas, and Frames Quickstart Guide

Pricing for our print products is available in our print application, ROES; we don't list this pricing on our website because all of our print products can be highly customized, resulting in a wide range of prices for each product (depending on your preferences)

Images should generally be sized to 300 DPI at final print size. There are some exceptions where the DPI can be as low as 150 depending on the image quality and print size. Images must be saved in RGB color space (not indexed color or CMYK). All files must be submitted in sRGB color profile.

Mac:
Mac OS 10.7 or Higher
Minimum 1.6GHz, late-model processor
4GB RAM Minimum (2 GB for earlier OS versions)
1 GB available hard drive space for installation

Windows:
Windows 7, 64 bit or higher
Minimum 1.6GHz, late-model processor
4GB RAM Minimum (2 GB for earlier OS versions)

Some Mac computers have trouble installing ROES through the traditional installation instructions. To avoid this issue, instead of double clicking the ROES icon when prompted, click and drag the icon directly into your Applications Folder. Double click the installer from there to complete the process.

Sometimes ROES needs to be refreshed when you open the application in order for you to see any updates that have been made. Don't fret, this will not delete your data or orders. Here’s how:

1) Go to the “Home Screen”

2) Click on "Diagnostic Tools" in the lower right hand corner, and
click "Clear Caches"

3) Select “Clear both” in the pop-up window and click "OK". This will shut down the program and refresh the data. This will not affect your previous orders or information.

Sorry, friend! If you have already received a confirmation email, we cannot cancel or modify your ROES order—once orders are uploaded, they are immediately entered into our production queue. You may cancel orders in the ROES software before the upload is complete.

Turnaround times range from 1 to 7 business days. Specific prices for our print products available in ROES are listed on the website. Please note that this includes production time only, not shipping time. You can find the individual turnaround times for each product in the links below:

ROES can be a little tricky sometimes. Did you check out Richard’s Quickstart Guides for ordering albums and ordering prints, canvas, & frames? If that doesn’t do the trick, call or email us.

Richard has Paper Sample Packs available for purchase in ROES. Our Paper Sample Pack includes pre-printed samples of our photographic and fine art papers.

If you’re not quite ready to purchase any samples yet, you can still get lots of information and see pictures of all of our print products on our website. Here are the links:

Lab-corrected prints are adjusted for density, color and contrast by our highly-skilled digital team, with a focus on optimal skin tones. This makes images look their best for printing on Richard’s machines--use this option if your monitor is not calibrated.

Psst… NPR interviewed Richard about calibrating printers for skin tones; read or listen here.

If you can’t download our print application, there is probably a setting in your computer blocking our app from downloading. Please follow the instructions below to allow ROES to download:

1) Open up your system preferences by clicking on the Apple Menu and selecting “System Preferences”

2) Find the “Security & Privacy” settings

3) In the "General" tab, you may need to click the lock icon at the bottom of the window in order to make changes.

4) Go to “Allow applications downloaded from:"—If you see Richard Photo Lab, choose that. Otherwise, you can choose " Anywhere".

Now try the download again, and it should work without a hitch!
If you are still getting an error message please call us at (661) 200-5300, or email us with a screen shot and computer information (operating system version, what internet browser and version you are using, if you’ve ever used another lab's ROES program before), and we’d be happy to help with any more issues you might be having.
